A code of conduct defines the behavioural standards an organisation expects of every employee — beyond the minimum requirements of law. Code of conduct training translates those written standards into understood, applicable behaviour: employees must not just receive the document but demonstrate comprehension and commit to compliance.
Effective code of conduct training addresses five core domains: ethical decision-making (how to navigate moral grey zones), conflicts of interest (identifying and disclosing situations where personal interest could conflict with organisational duty), anti-bribery and gifts (what can and cannot be received or offered), data and information handling (confidentiality, data protection, insider information), and professional conduct (how employees represent the organisation internally and externally).
The design challenge is realism. Most code of conduct violations are not obvious — they're ambiguous situations where an employee genuinely isn't sure what the right answer is. Training must therefore use realistic scenario-based dilemmas, not just policy recitation. A well-designed code of conduct programme asks: 'what would you do if a supplier offered you a gift worth ₹5,000 ahead of a contract renewal?' — not just 'what does the policy say about gifts?'
Regulators and courts treat documented code of conduct training as evidence of organisational due diligence.
