Blended Learning
Blended learning combines instructor-led training with digital eLearning, creating a hybrid approach that leverages the strengths of both formats.
Full Definition
Blended learning is an educational strategy that deliberately integrates face-to-face instruction with online digital learning experiences. Rather than simply combining two formats, it is a thoughtful design philosophy — using each modality where it excels.
Live sessions (instructor-led training, workshops, role-plays) are reserved for complex interpersonal skills, coaching interactions, and practice scenarios where real-time human feedback is irreplaceable. Digital components (eLearning modules, videos, assessments) handle foundational knowledge acquisition and post-training reinforcement.
The '70-20-10' model often underpins blended learning design: 70% experiential learning, 20% social/coaching, 10% formal instruction. A well-designed blend sequences these touchpoints intentionally — not randomly mixing content types.
For enterprise L&D, blended learning programmes demonstrate measurably better retention than either pure eLearning or pure classroom training, making it the preferred approach for leadership development, sales enablement, and onboarding programmes.
