Learning Path
A learning path is a curated, sequenced series of learning experiences designed to develop a specific role competency or skill area from foundational to advanced level.
Full Definition
A learning path (also called a learning journey or curriculum) is a structured sequence of learning activities designed to develop a defined competency. It guides learners through a progression — from foundational awareness to applied proficiency — using multiple formats and touchpoints.
A well-designed learning path for, say, 'new manager effectiveness' might include: a pre-assessment to identify individual gaps, three eLearning modules on foundational management concepts, a facilitated workshop on performance conversations, a simulation of a difficult feedback scenario, peer reflection activities, and a post-assessment after 90 days.
The sequencing logic is critical. Learning paths are not playlists — they are instructional architectures where each element builds on the last. Content that is encountered before the learner has foundational knowledge will not produce learning; content delivered without practice opportunity will not produce behaviour change.
Modern LMS platforms support learning path design with features for prerequisite management, progress tracking, manager visibility, and personalisation based on role or assessed skill level.
