The Challenge
For senior bankers at a leading multinational Asian banking group, the fundamentals of Asset Liability Management (ALM) were never in question. They understood the regulatory metrics and the mechanics of the balance sheet. However, there was a widening chasm between "classroom knowledge" and the split-second, high-stakes decision-making required during a genuine financial tremor.
The bank identified a critical "Application Gap." In a real-world crisis—like a sudden wholesale funding freeze or a rapid retail deposit outflow—theory often gives way to panic or paralysis. Furthermore, the organization struggled with functional silos. During calm waters, CEOs, CROs, and Treasurers operate in their own spheres; during a crisis, these roles must converge instantly within the Asset Liability Committee (ALCO) to make trade-offs between profitability and survival.
The requirement was clear: the bank needed more than a seminar. They needed a "stress test" for their leadership—a high-fidelity environment that mimicked the intensity of a financial war room, where every decision carried immediate financial consequences.
The Aktrea Approach
Aktrea moved away from static slides and instead built a high-energy, facilitator-led "Crisis Committee" and "ALM War Room." We transformed the training room into a live simulation where participants weren't just students—they were active ALCO members tasked with steering a multi-billion dollar ship through a storm.
The workshop utilized two distinct, immersive formats:
1. The Crisis Committee (Simulation-Driven): We assigned participants specific, high-pressure roles (CEO, CRO, Treasurer) and thrust them into deteriorating scenarios. To break down silos, we introduced "Role Huddles"—sessions where all CEOs from different competing teams met to align their strategic philosophies before returning to their specific "boards" to execute. This forced cross-functional empathy and strategic consistency.
2. The ALM War Room (Competitive Strategy): In this phase, the pace accelerated. We introduced "Curve-Ball" events—sudden regulatory shifts or fintech-driven outflows—every 10 minutes. Teams competed to maximize their ROE (Return on Equity) while navigating strict risk limits. This wasn't just about the right answer; it was about the fastest and most creative strategic response.
What Set It Apart
The Results
The workshop transformed a standard training requirement into a rigorous institutional stress test. By the end of the sessions, the theoretical became tangible, and the siloed became collaborative. The engagement levels bypassed traditional benchmarks, as participants were not merely consuming information—they were defending a balance sheet.
Key Outcomes
The Bigger Picture
In the modern financial landscape, technical expertise is the baseline, but "War Room" agility is the differentiator. This project demonstrates Aktrea’s philosophy that true learning happens at the intersection of theory and pressure. By replacing passive observation with high-fidelity simulation, we don't just teach senior leaders how to read a balance sheet—we prepare them to lead through the next inevitable market shock.
This case study showcases Aktrea's commitment to transforming learning experiences through innovative design and cutting-edge technology.
