The Challenge
For a leading Global Chemical Manufacturing Company with a vast international presence, information security wasn't just a policy—it was a critical pillar of their global operations. Yet, their annual InfoSec training had become a dreaded annual ritual. Employees worldwide were experiencing "security fatigue," disengaging from repetitive, slide-based presentations that struggled to capture their attention, let alone embed vital cybersecurity practices.
The core problem was an engagement deficit. In an age of sophisticated cyber threats, the company needed more than passive compliance; they needed an active "human firewall." Their existing eLearning was failing to transform employees from mere policy recipients into vigilant participants in the company’s defense. With operations spanning across diverse cultures and continents, a one-size-fits-all approach also fell flat, leaving many feeling disconnected from the critical material.
The ambition was clear: move beyond simply informing employees of policies to inspiring them to apply complex cybersecurity protocols in their daily work. The challenge was monumental – how do you make a mandatory, often dry, subject captivating, culturally relevant, and practically impactful for a global workforce speaking 11 different languages?
The Aktrea Approach
Aktrea stepped in with a bold vision: to completely reimagine InfoSec training, transforming it from a chore into an exhilarating mission. Our solution, "Operation Shadow Web," was not just an eLearning module; it was a high-performance, narrative-driven game designed to immerse learners in a compelling cybersecurity saga.
We cast learners as the frontline defenders of the organization, tasked with thwarting a notorious hacker collective. This high-stakes narrative instantly elevated the training from a policy review to an urgent, personal quest. The game unfolded on a virtual board, intricately designed to mirror the client's actual global locations, making the experience tangibly relevant to every employee's real-world environment. Using a virtual dice-rolling mechanic, learners navigated this board, with each location presenting unique InfoSec challenges and modules. Success wasn't just about passing a quiz; it earned "Intel Points," crucial for capturing hackers and eventually unmasking the mastermind behind the cyberattacks.
Crucially, Aktrea executed a massive global localization effort, deploying "Operation Shadow Web" in 11 languages, including English, Thai, Hungarian, Korean, Italian, Arabic, French, Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, and Brazilian. This meticulous localization ensured that every employee, from a factory floor in Asia to an R&D lab in Europe, could engage with the narrative, understand the policies, and internalize best practices in their native tongue, breaking down language and cultural barriers to cybersecurity awareness.
What Set It Apart
The Results
"Operation Shadow Web" catalyzed a profound transformation within the Global Chemical Manufacturing Company. What was once a source of annual dread became an anticipated, engaging experience. Employees no longer passively consumed information; they actively strategized, learned, and contributed to their organization's digital defense. The immersive gameplay fostered a deeper connection to cybersecurity principles, strengthening the collective "Human Firewall" across the entire global enterprise. This shift empowered employees to move from merely "knowing" policies to confidently "applying" them, significantly bolstering the company's overall security posture.
Key Outcomes
The Bigger Picture
This project exemplifies Aktrea's philosophy: mandatory compliance training doesn't have to be mundane. By leveraging the power of gamification, narrative design, and meticulous localization, we demonstrated that even the most critical and complex subjects can be transformed into highly engaging, impactful, and globally resonant learning experiences. "Operation Shadow Web" sets a new benchmark for how global enterprises can not only achieve compliance but also cultivate a robust, proactive cybersecurity culture, proving that innovation in learning design is key to building a truly resilient organization.
This case study showcases Aktrea's commitment to transforming learning experiences through innovative design and cutting-edge technology.
