The Challenge
For a global leader in coffee manufacturing, "culture" isn't just a buzzword—it’s the essence of their product. However, when it came to addressing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), the organization faced a common hurdle: the "compliance fatigue" associated with traditional Unconscious Bias training. Standard HR modules often felt abstract, academic, and disconnected from the high-pressure reality of the roasting house or the logistics floor.
The client needed a way to globalize inclusion across a sprawling European supply chain. The challenge was two-fold. First, the content had to resonate with a diverse workforce ranging from expert coffee tasters to regional sales managers. Second, it had to overcome the linguistic and cultural barriers inherent in a multi-market operation.
They didn't just need their employees to define bias; they needed them to recognize it in the heat of a decision—whether that was selecting a new supplier or managing a team during peak production. The goal was to move from "knowing" to "doing" through a medium that felt disarming and reflective rather than confrontational.
The Aktrea Approach
Aktrea moved away from theory and toward the one thing every employee understood: the coffee itself. We re-engineered our core Unconscious Bias framework into a bespoke, gamified "Bean-to-Brew" narrative. Instead of clicking through slides of definitions, learners navigated a digital gameboard that mirrored the actual lifecycle of coffee production.
By mapping psychological biases to specific manufacturing stages, we turned abstract concepts into operational realities:
To ensure this wasn’t just a "headquarters-down" initiative, we localized the experience into eight languages. This went beyond simple translation; we adapted the nuances of language and cultural context to ensure that a manager in Amsterdam and a supervisor in Istanbul felt the content was written specifically for their world.
What Set It Apart
The Results
The "Bean-to-Brew" journey successfully transformed DEI from a checkbox exercise into a shared cultural experience. By grounding sensitive topics in the familiar vocabulary of coffee manufacturing, the program bypassed the usual resistance to "soft skills" training in industrial sectors.

The Bigger Picture
This project demonstrates that in the world of global manufacturing, the most effective learning isn't just about the transfer of information—it’s about the transformation of perspective. By blending industry-specific storytelling with sophisticated game mechanics, Aktrea helped a global giant turn a complex social challenge into a source of competitive advantage. It proves that when you respect the learner’s context, you don't just change how they think; you change how they work.
This case study showcases Aktrea's commitment to transforming learning experiences through innovative design and cutting-edge technology.
