SCORM

SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is the technical standard that defines how eLearning content communicates with a Learning Management System — passing completion status, scores, and progress data.

Full Definition

SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model. It is a technical specification — a set of standards — that defines how eLearning content packages are structured, and how they communicate data (completion status, time spent, assessment scores) back to a Learning Management System.

The practical significance: SCORM is what allows a course built in Articulate Storyline to work correctly in any SCORM-compatible LMS — whether that is Moodle, SuccessFactors, Cornerstone, or Totara. Without a standard like SCORM, every course would require custom integration with every platform.

SCORM 1.2 (released 2001) and SCORM 2004 are the dominant versions. SCORM 1.2 is the most widely supported but has limitations — it cannot track completion of mobile offline learning or non-linear navigation paths. xAPI (Experience API / Tin Can) was developed to address these limitations.

For L&D professionals, SCORM is primarily a procurement and compatibility concern. When purchasing off-the-shelf courses or commissioning custom content, confirming the SCORM version supported by your LMS is a practical requirement.
